3. Wood variability
Wood is a natural, anisotropic material. Even within the same species, individual boards vary in density, moisture content, grain orientation, and presence of defects (knots, checks, reaction wood). Our calculators use published reference values (USDA FPL Wood Handbook) and cannot account for the specific characteristics of any single board. Always:
- Measure moisture content with a calibrated meter before machining.
- Inspect boards for defects before relying on load calculations.
- Build prototypes or test cuts on scrap when the project matters.
4. Tool and machine safety
Calculations related to machine speeds (router RPM, saw blade selection, etc.) assume the tool is in good working order, blades/bits are sharp and properly installed, and the operator is following all manufacturer safety guidelines. Always consult your tool's manual, wear appropriate PPE, and follow safe operating procedures.
